THE BIATHLON
From the Greek ‘bi’, meaning ‘two’ and ‘athlon’, meaning ‘contest’, the biathlon is an event that combines two disciplines. Generally, when we talk about the biathlon, we mean the combination of cross-country skiing and rifle marksmanship, target-shooting from a standing or lying-down position. It involves individual events like sprinting, pursuit, racing or a relay. Our Jura Mountains are a breeding-ground for champions in this discipline and it is taught in most ski clubs. We need only cite the recent medal-winners at the Winter Olympics in Turin : Florent Baverel-Robert, Vincent Defrasne, Elodie Bourgeois Pin..
Where can you find a biathlon field?
Some Nordic ski sites are equipped with special fields for contests or club events. You can find one at the Plan d’Hotonnes, located on the Plâteau de Retord (www.hotonnes.com) and at Hopitaux Vieux in the resort of Métabief-Mont d’Or (www.montdor-2lacs.com).
THE NORDIC COMBINÉ
It’s roots go back 5,000 years in the history of Norway and it combines ski jumping and a cross-country race.
Where can you do this sport?
Truffe stadium in the resort of Les Rousses (www.lesrousses.com)
is the French centre for training in this discipline and it hosts national and international events, as does la Côte Feuillée at Chaux Neuve in the neighbouring department of the Doubs which also offers beginners the chance to do ski-jumping with professionals while providing all the necessary equipment.
